(Conscious) Bling

Thinking of buying the special woman in your life some bling? They say diamonds are a girl’s best friend. But given all the bad press about blood diamonds, we weren’t so sure.

That is, until we found The Clarity Project, a San Fran-based social enterprise that sells only fairly sourced jewelry and invests all its profits in organizations that are working to improve the miners’ quality of life. From classic rings to custom pieces, The Clarity Project uses metals that are Fair Trade Certified, artisanally mined, or reclaimed through an environmentally sound process.  Sounds like a great place to pick something up for Mother Dearest before Sunday.

James Allen also sells conflict-free diamonds in accordance with the Kimberly Process, the Patriot Act, and United Nations resolutions. In fact, James Allen manufactures many of its own diamonds to verify the stones’ origins. Customers can choose from all the standard cuts, including pear, emerald, round, and princess.

Retailers are becoming increasingly aware of this issue, so check with The Conflict-Free Diamond Council for other recommendations. With time, perhaps more jewelers will add a fifth C to the four C’s: color, cut, clarity, carat weight, and conflict-free!
